Triangle Project Follow up on public statement: ‘Corrective Rape Campaign’

Triangle Project wishes to announce that our public statement issued on Thursday the 17th of February was not intended in any way as a public attack on the organisations supporting these campaigns. Triangle Project recognises the support and potential change these campaigns and petitions have generated. We further recognise the need for international support to address the issues of sexual violence against the LGBTI community and wish to participate in efforts that seek to transform societies that continue to enforce gender and sexuality norms through violence.

Change.org, Avaaz and Triangle Project have agreed to collaborate to address the concerns raised by Triangle Project. Together we wish to address ethical concerns by rethinking the utilisation of sensationalist imagery. We will also work to build an evidence base to ascertain the nature, scope and prevalence of violence targeting the LGBTI community. We will work to open up the channels of communication to ensure that the voices of survivors are heard and that activist strategies centre on the well-being of survivors.
Finally we wish to participate in the move towards collective and contextualised engagement amongst diverse stakeholders in taking the debate on ‘corrective rape’ and hate crime legislation forward. We invite stakeholders working on issues of gender violence, hate crimes and human rights to join us in supporting the collaborative development of a national advocacy plan.
